Musical Instrument Crafts

More than 30 Years of international research in musicology, acoustics, harmonic studies, intangible heritage, pedagogy and healing arts – utilising at the same time the traditional craft talents, indigenous skills and community organisation systems of Tamil culture – make SVARAM’s products and services unique in the Indian and Asian context.

About The Craft

We take up all different materials of wood, bamboo, seeds, skins, metals, stone, glass, etc. and explore their inherent vibrational quality and capacity for resonance, and heighten their use into musical instruments, energised, expressive objects with their own story to tell. We are teasing out of matter its hidden secret, its gift of vibration, it regenerative power – of light and sound.

Discovery Spirit

Working with our hands unfolds our hearts and applies our mind, energises the embodied spirit and builds community. The inherent talent of the indigenous trainees and artisans and the expertise of the craft masters creates a happy atmosphere and discovery spirit and readiness to experiment with the unknown, to discover yet unheard of sound sources.

Sound Education

We integrate our musical instruments with sound education to enhance our youth’s learning environment.

Collaboration Portals

Design Atelier

Innovation is at the heart of our sonic craft explorations. Through your involvement we can establish a professional design atelier and studio for experimentation and developing new prototypes.

Instrument Workshops

Traditionally musical instrument craft artisans follow their own domain: winds, strings, skins and percussion. Your support can co-create fine artisan workshops of any category.

Equipment & Machines

While handcrafts are at the center of musical instrument work, many of our larger and production works necessitate specialised equipment and machinery. Your technical know-how and support can help to modernise the craft.
