COMMUNITY MUSIC
Through the art of improvisation, music becomes an universal language; it bridges the gaps of communication between cultures and generations. Open musical gatherings are a growing, unifying cultural activity in many parts of the world. They offer opportunities to express our aspirations for an actual human unity. To strengthen our growing community, playing music has been an integrated part of SVARAMs activities from the very beginning. There are specific constraints in the local rural culture about public music as it is played only by certain sections of the society and then heard at specified occasions only like marriages, temple festivals and funerals. On the other hand, the international students/travelers passing through Auroville often bring, encourage and enhance free expression and communal play.
A youth performing arts group - the "Mohanam Sound Crew" - had grown out of the joint activities of the Mohanam Culture Center and SVARAM, and has been invited and playing at folk festivals in different states of India and at an international theater festival in Thailand.
Recently a group of young musicians residing next door in the Terra Soul community (www.terrasoul.org) has been supporting SVARAM's efforts towards more musical programs with classes, workshops and performances. Our juniors continue to explore their own music, based mainly on percussion, and they are grateful for opportunities to play together and learn from visiting musicians. A project has been initiated to create more community based music activities. It aims at bridging cultures and generations, bringing together Aurovillians, villagers, volunteers, visiting students and musicians through regular activities. The goal is to co-create a new way of non-verbal, harmonizing and unifying interaction through the following activities: offer regular classes in basic musical skills and open drum circles create home-made instruments (partly of recycled material) constitute a basic percussion orchestra and providing it with new instruments find new ways of musical inter-cultural expressions explore communal outdoor spaces for musical gatherings participate in educational and cultural/sport activities and celebrations
